BioBlitz is both an educational event for on-lookers and a fun and exciting opportunity for biologists with taxonomic skills or specialties of any sort to get together and have 24 hours to ID every species living in an ~700 acre area. It's been happening on the east coast since 1996 and has become something of a competition, kind of like an olympics for biologists. The record so far was near Waldon Pond where they recorded over 1900 spp from 3pm to 3pm the following day. Xerces is a sponsor for the first Western BioBlitz, providing some taxonomic expertise and advertising the event to the community of invertebrate fans and scientists. The event will begin at 3:pm on Friday, June 16 and end at 3:pm on Saturday, June 17th, and will be held at Champoeg State Heritage Area just south of Portland, Oregon. Camping is available and an interpretive center will serve as headquarters for the event.
